Depo-Provera Associated With Cancer Risks

We Help Victims Seek the Justice They Deserve

Depo-Provera, a hormonal contraceptive injection, has been associated wih several health concerns that have prompted increased scrutiny and legal claims. Studies and reports have linked the medication to a heightened risk of significant side effects, such as bone density loss, osteoporosis, blood clots, and cardiovascular complications.

Additionally, some users have reported severe mood changes, depression, and long-term fertility challenges. These potential health risks, coupled with claims of insufficient warnings from manufacturers, have led to allegations that patients were not adequately informed about the full spectrum of potential side effects before beginning treatment. These concerns have raised awareness about the need for transparent medical guidance and thorough monitoring for individuals using Depo-Provera.

Depo-Provera Lawsuit Updates

March 2024:
A study found women injected with medroxyprogesterone acetate, the active ingredient and generic form of the Depo-Provera shot, had a 5.6-fold higher risk of developing meningioma. French researchers published their findings in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in March 2024.

August 2024:
Lawyers continue to investigate claims of meningioma after Depo-Provera use. According to our research, these cases are in the early stages and haven’t entered a discovery phase yet.

October 2024:
Monique Jones became one of the first women to file a Depo-Provera meningioma lawsuit against Pfizer and other defendants. According to our research of the complaint, Jones claimed Pfizer and the other defendants knew or should have known that Depo-Provera could contribute to the development of meningiomas. Despite this, defendants did not warn the public about the risk and as of the date of the lawsuit's filing, there is no warning on the birth control shot's label. Jones' doctors are unwilling to perform surgery and so she will continue to live with symptoms such as headaches, blurred vision and vertigo.

November 2024:
A motion has been filed to consolidate Depo-Provera lawsuits into multidistrict litigation in California. The formation of an MDL would be a big step forward in the litigation, helping to streamline the process as cases grow. In our experience, it can take a few months for a decision to be made on the motion.

Pfizer Faces Growing Lawsuits Over
Depo-Provera’s Brain Tumor Risks

Pfizer is facing increasing lawsuits over claims that it failed to warn users of the elevated risk of brain tumors, particularly meningiomas, linked to long-term Depo-Provera use. A 2024 study revealed a five-fold increase in tumor risk, prompting lawsuits and discussions of consolidating the cases.

Studies Indicate Depo-Provera Causes Meningioma

Those most at risk for developing meningiomas or other brain tumors from Depo-Provera use are women who have been using the contraceptive for long periods, typically more than one year.  Women with a history of long-term hormonal contraceptive use, especially those receiving regular Depo-Provera injections, are at a higher risk.
