Injuries Linked to Recalled FreeStyle Libre 3 & Libre 3 Plus Sensors

candid-woman-freestyle-libre3

Abbott Diabetes Care has recalled certain FreeStyle Libre 3 and Libre 3 Plus continuous glucose monitor (CGM) sensors due to reports that the devices provided inaccurate glucose readings. These inaccurate readings may show normal blood sugar levels while patients are actually experiencing dangerously high or low blood sugar levels.  For insulin-dependent diabetics, inaccurate CGM data can have life-threatening consequences.

Patients who suffered serious complications -including diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), severe hypoglycemia, or hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state - after relying on faulty readings from a recalled Libre 3 or Libre 3 Plus sensor in 2025 may have a valid legal claim against Abbott.

FressStyle Libre Lawsuit News

Abbott recalled approximately 3 million FreeStyle Libre 3 and Libre 3 Plus sensors in November 2025 after internal testing revealed that certain sensors were providing incorrectly low glucose readings - potentially causing patients to skip insulin doses or consume excess carbohydrates when not needed. 1
The FDA classified the recall as the most serious type (Class 1), meaning the defective sensors could cause serious injury or death if patients continued to rely on the inaccurate readings.2
As of January 7, 2026 Abbott had reported 860 serious injuries and seven deaths globally associated with the defective sensors. Fifty-seven of the serious injuries were documented in the United States.3
Abbott has previously issued a separate recall in July 2024 for a small number of FreeStyle Libre 3 sensors that provided inaccurately high glucose readings - the second accuracy problem disclosed within 18 months.4
